When you're satisfied, hit "Done," and the clip will appear in your note. Once your page loads, you can pinch-zoom to adjust the page to the size you like, or scroll to the area that you want to clip. Alternatively, you can tap a URL bar to manually type the web address where you'd like to start. If you want to fetch a Web clip, Notability will first suggest that you navigate using URL bookmarks. Sketching figures in the mini art application that's included in Notability is a wonderful feature, but I liked taking Web clips the most. Select it, and you can choose to insert a picture (from your iPad's photo gallery), figure (which you can sketch on the spot), or Web clip.
Images and Sharing At the bottom of every Notability note page is an image icon. You can stop recording by pressing the red button again, or by pressing a triangular play button, which will playback what you've just recorded as well. Recording starts when the clock begins ticking. Press it, and wait a moment for a minutes and seconds counter to appear. A record button sits at the top of every note. One minor nuisance is that as you type items into bullet points, the bullets don't look like they will align properly until you hit Enter, but they're fine once you do.Īs mentioned, Notability can store audio recordings, too. And the crème de la crème, multiple "undo/redo"s are supported. All the essential buttons and menus for customizing the look and formatting of your text are present-dozens of typefaces, 15 colors, point sizes 8 to 48, bullet lists, numbered lists, and more.
Memos Composing text-based notes in Notability felt almost as natural as typing in a desktop word-processing program-something I've done almost daily my entire adult life. Once you've found this button, you still can't immediately reassign the subject-you have to select a file and then press "Move," a button in the top menu that doesn't appear until after you've selected "Edit." I pressed every conceivable button within the note file, and I tried dragging and dropping from the landing screen, until finally landing on the "Edit" button in the top menu.

For example, I had no problem figuring out how to create a new Subject (tap the plus sign next to "Subjects") and how to create a new note (tap the icon of a pen on paper), but I did not quickly see how to change the Subject of a note I had previously written. The landing page also gives you a snapshot of each note: its title, creation date and time, file size, whether it contains an audio file (indicated by the words "Rec" next to a red dot), and Subject.Īn unencumbered interface ( see the slideshow) makes Notability fairly easy to use, although a few minor inconsistencies had me poking around in a trial-and-error hunt for the right button. Subjects are the filing system used in this app, and they function much like folders, or what Evernote calls Notebooks. NOTABILITY FOR IPAD PROBLEMS FREE
If you don't think you'd put that sketch pad to work, however, you're better off with Evernote or another free note app. Having a mini art application built right inside the note-taking app could be tremendously useful to certain kinds of users. Notability's real edge is its sketching and image mark-up feature, called the Figure Editor. Evernote in particular offers enough features to meet the needs of most users, even if it can't do everything that Notability can. That pricepoint makes Notability is a good bargain, although there are plenty of decent free note-taking apps, such as Evernote (for iPad) (3 stars) and Notetable (for iPad) (3 stars).
Ginger Labs, which developed the app, charges a mere 99 cents for Notability, originally billed as a limited time offer, but apparently now here to stay. Notability is a dream to use if you need all these features, but it could be a waste of five bucks if you don't. For writers, Notability includes dozens of fonts, text point sizes, colors, and a solid number of formatting presets (such as bullet points, indents, and so forth). It supports text, images, and audio recordings, and contains a sketch pad that lets you not only draw new images, but also mark up images, Web clips, and clip art that you import. The iPad and iPad 2 app Notability is one of the most fully-featured note-taking programs for mobile devices.
